Following the surging trend for women-owned businesses through the U.S., Air Force vet and Mom, CEO Kris McGuire has built a successful defense contracting business in Huntsville, AL.
"Kris McGuire served in the Air Force - becoming one of the first women assigned to a maintenance squadron at Kirkland Air Force Base - before staying at home to raise her two daughters and finishing her college degree. She never dreamed of someday being an entrepreneur, much less starting a defense contracting business.
Six years ago this month, McGuire founded Victory Solutions Inc. in Huntsville with the help of one of her mentors, Pete Apple, who's now her chief adviser, and Shane Doty, the company's president who manages the Charleston, S.C., office. The disabled veteran-owned, woman-owned small business has grown to 50 employees and three locations, including Guntersville, and McGuire believes the number of employees could triple by this time next year.
Entrepreneurship turned out to be the perfect move for McGuire, the company's CEO.
"I love what I'm doing," said McGuire, 58, from her corner office in a suite on Corporate Drive in Huntsville. "Every day, I can't wait to get to work and plot what I'm going to do next.
"I'm having fun growing this company, hiring great people and doing great things for the warfighter."
